Now, less than a year later, the team, known as Super Alignment, has disbanded, employees have resigned, accusing OpenAI of prioritizing product launches over artificial intelligence security. According to six sources familiar with the operations of the OpenAI Super Alignment team, OpenAI has never fulfilled its promise to provide the team with 20% computing power.

Instead, according to sources, the team repeatedly asked for the use of graphics processing units (dedicated computer chips needed to train and run artificial intelligence applications), but were rejected by OpenAI leadership, although the team's total computing budget never approached the promised 20% threshold.

The disclosures raise questions about how serious OpenAI is about honoring its public commitments and whether other public commitments the company makes can be trusted.

The company is currently embroiled in a dispute with Hollywood movie star Scarlett Johansson, who accuses the company of using AI voice that resembles her voice without her consent. In this case, questions have been raised about the credibility of OpenAI's public statement that the similarity between the AI voice it calls "Sky" and Johnson's voice is purely coincidental.

OpenAI denies using Johnson's voice without her permission, saying it paid a professional actress to produce Sky Voice, and said it could not disclose her name. But Johnson's claims raised doubts, with speculation on social media that OpenAI actually cloned Johnson's voice, or might somehow mix another actress's voice with Johnson's voice to create Sky Voice.
